Forget everything else...do you even hear what you are okay with? Shooting people for stealing a car...after it has been stolen. Shooting someone for being an a$$hole. I don't care if it is a gun, a knife, your fists; you're okay with a world in which we get to just kill the people who piss us off. That is insane. [/quote]

I would have preferred for both men who got shot to have had lesser corrective interventions earlier in life, but our institutions have largely abdicated those responsibilities. We make every excuse for them, and in many ways reward anti-social behavior, so I am not one bit surprised we're seeing a new generation of Bernie Goetz re-enactors.

If we let crazy people high on all sorts of synthetic drugs wander around stabbing people, don't be surprised when people shoot crazy acting and aggressive people that come at them. If the police basically treat auto theft as a private matter, then don't be surprised when people start addressing it in a private manner.

I wonder if you are an apolitical person making this post or from which side you come at it. From where I come at it - as an actual liberal Democrat, not just someone who poses as one on this board (not that you are claiming that) - I see lots of blame being heaped toward Democrats on this. And I agree to some extent; reform bail and jailing/sentencing when it keeps hurting the same people over and over again but prosecute “little” crimes like thefts for fun and profit, public urination and pooping, vandalism and tagging.

But I never see Republicans taking responsibility for their part in all this. They continue to pretend that Donald Trump did nothing wrong and that he’s being politically targeted. They harbor squads of unfit people in their elected ranks (fraud, lies, corruption, sexual assault, rape, domestic abuse) and refuse to acknowledge, no matter how many statistics they’re shown, that some people get “policed” more than others. And perhaps the biggest crime issue that doesn’t necessarily touch us all but every parent lives in fear of: mass shootings. I don’t see Republicans introducing any bills to get more people into the field of mental health care or to fund coverage or fund more beds for inpatient psychiatric care. They’re concerned about people speaking English and harassing elected Democrats and a whole raft of nonsense.

So, yes. I wish crime were taken more seriously across the board. [/quote]
