The most miserable men I know are the ones unhappily married to SAHMs (especially if the SAHMs don't do as much with the kids as the husband thinks she should) but who know they'll be destroyed in alimony payments.
The moral of the story - don't be married to SAHM, make sure your wife is able to work by being an equal partner as far as household and childcare duties.
Also, make sure you marry a woman who is capable of earning a decent (doesn't have to be super-high but decent) living on her own. A lot of these unhappily married couples aren't the ones where they discussed it and the wife gave up her job as a nurse or scientist to care for kids, they're couples where the wife had spotty employment histories and they backed into the SAHM arrangement because it cost more for childcare than her salary. The same is true of the reverse--the Stay at Home Dad families where the dad gave up their decent job after much discussion to care for kids tend to be happier than the ones where they back into the arrangement because the dad is chronically underemployed/unemployed/between jobs.
