there is no need for your kid to communicate with you during class.  It's a distraction. Did your parents need to communicate with you when you were in school and didn't have a phone?

We’d use the pay phone.  They always made sure we had money to call them and it was expected we call if something changed.  If phones were invented we would have all had them too.  Some kids had pagers.  [/quote]

Pagers were not allowed in my school. Confiscated and a week worth of detention.

I used them all the time to tell them about after school activities or some other change.  We were required to call our parents for any change and immediately when we got home from school.[/quote]

We didn't have a late bus to where we were nor bus service and had to cut through the train tracks which wasn't exactly fully safe alone.   I had no issue communicating where I was, nor do my kids to me.  [/quote]
