I have no dog in the fight and could care less about the royals but bought the book because I work with survivors of abuse and from the tidbits I knew, I really felt empathy for Harry. It’s clear to me that Harry was emotionally abused and gaslit his entire life, traumatized from the loss of his mother and his inability to have his own narrative .. and now he has taken his power back by using his voice. It may seem extreme to some, but when you’ve been silenced by a machine that is only about appearances your whole life then this is the repercussion of that. He says all he wants is accountability from the people that hurt him but all they did was call him paranoid and delusional. That’s not how you repair relationships and clearly the monarchy cares more about their image than anything else.
The issue is perspective. Is it actual truth that his family has done nothign but emotionally abuse and traumatize and silence and gaslight him his entire life? Is that really all he ever experienced before leaving a couple years ago? That every other story or picture was all an orchestrated lie to hide the abuse and to create a faux appearance? While that may be his perspective, it isn't necessarily the reality or totality of what actually happened. Obviously none of us know what went on behind closed doors and maybe his entire life was void of love or anything positive and only about abuse and trauma and mistreatment and pain and he finally escaped the clutches of an abhorent family. Time changes how we see things and siblings within a family can also tell very different accounts of the same events and experiences from their own perspective. If William took back his power would he also tell the same story or would his perspective of some of the events that Harry has described be different - and then who is telling the 'truth'? Accountability depends on perspective and perspective is shaped by many factors. There may be some who think he is accountable and needs to take accountability for hurt and pain he caused. Does he see his role in the pain of others? I don't know any of them. However I would never read a memoir and think that was the truth, especially when told in this way (for major profit) and with the inconsistencies of this one. Given also the hypocrisy of his and Meghan's attempts to silence her father and to deny him his narrative and to refuse to reconcile with him because he too sold pictures / stories about the family for profit.
