Too many replies to read but here is my take. FWIW, I am an adult woman with anxiety and ADHD undiagnosed until my late 40s and have had a binge eating disorder since a young age. 1) locking the cabinet may solve the immediate nighttime binging but is not teaching them long term strategies. In fact it may have the opposite effect during waking hours and also make the binge eating worse down the road when they move out because they will be conditioned to worrying that they won’t have access to food. 2) binging is absolutely related to ADHD and anxiety as I’ve seen others point out. There are things you and DH may be doing or saying that is feeding that (no pun intended there) so you need to consult with a child psychologist on this. Definitely that was part of my issues growing up. 3) ADHD meds definitely help curb binge eating while in your system. When it wears off is a danger zone, which leads to #4 4) untreated adhd and anxiety wreaks havoc on sleep. You really need to work with a child psychiatrist, along with psychologist, to get on top of this. Please don’t make any drastic changes until you have a clear path ahead from the professionals.
