I’m wondering if they didn’t trust a babysitter or someone they didn’t know well, for whatever reason because otherwise it makes no sense. They obviously could have easily afforded child care but they made the deliberate choice to avoid it. Perhaps a bad experience in the past?
I know other people who do this. They can afford babysitters. I think they just think it’s fine nothing will happen. I had a coworker tell me one time he and his wife would leave their baby sleeping in an apartment (high rise) and take the phone to dinner around the corner. Nothing ever happened as far as I know but I was shocked for all the reasons people are saying here. You can’t get up a dozen plus flights of stairs in an emergency. Elevators shut down in a fire. I have such a different level of risk assessment than these folks. If it’s more dangerous to have someone sitting in the living room in case of emergency to keep your child safe maybe don’t go out. Even when my husband and I go out and have a babysitter I still worry about a car accident or something. I make sure she has all the emergency phone numbers and where we are going to be and if we’re meeting another couple, contact info for them as well.
