No, high-level athletes don't pick Basis because of the sports; however, the great thing is that mid-level athletes actually have a shot at playing. For my son who is a good, but not amazing athlete, this was actually a draw. He's able to make the teams and play for his school. This is very hard to do at most large public schools, but Basis' small size and makeup has afforded that, which has been a plus.

Separately, I find it very frustrating that most (soccer, basketball, baseball) large middle school teams are essentially off-limits to all but kids who have played travel sports for a while. I get it and why it happens and I don't see a solution, but I think its sad that a 6th grader has no shot at making his school soccer team without years of league experience first.  FWIW.[/quote]

You're painting with too broad a brush, PP.  I work at a public middle school in Arlington where there are abundant opportunities for mid-level athletes to play sports. In Arlington, each of the six public middle schools supports a number of open enrollment sports team. Even where tryouts are required to play on a team, there's often a junior team where the bar is set much lower to play than for a senior team. We live in DC EotP and know many BASIS families. In my experience, BASIS parents tend to disparage suburban middle schools for spurious reasons, to help justify their decision to stay in the District and send their kids to charters. [/quote]
