He has Type 1 Bipolar and episodes of mania. Mania includes psychosis but because it comes out in a more organized way and without the other characteristics that people associate with psychosis, they forget he is mentally ill. I have no idea what his actual belief system is when well. Having worked in acute psychiatric facilities, I can say that many people say outrageous things when manic that they would never say when well. They are so disinhibited, combined with their grandiose delusions and their flight of ideas and everything that goes along with mania and you hear a lot of really out there things.
Lack of inhibitions etc. from his mental illness - okay, but your fundamental values don't change. He's been thinking these things for a while, but was just medicated enough to not say it in public. So he does not get a pass from me.
I don't know his views when he is healthy and not manic, maybe they are the same. But psychosis and mania actually do change your fundamental views. People who are delusional and manic believe all kind of things and say all kinds of things that in no way represent their actual views. Mania is not a truth serum that disinhibits you to just say what you really think. I am not giving him a 'pass' in that I don't know how sick he is, and I don't know his underlying views, but I have seen many manic people who absolutely said and did and believed all kinds of things that were in no way representative at all of who they were or what they believed when well.
