A Filipina who taught with my mom arrived in August that year, taught all September, and in October was diagnosed with kidney cancer. She did not yet qualify for health insurance and needed to return home for treatment. She was told that her return ticket was contingent on finishing the school year and that moreover, she owed the district the cost of her flight to the US because she didn’t finish the first semester.
