We know someone who was admitted to Northeastern but is spending freshman year at their CA campus. Can anyone tell me more about this? Is it an option or is it mandatory for some students?
My DD will be attending the Boston campus I'm the Fall in the regular program. As PP explained, it's the NUBound program. You don't have a choice which program you get accepted to, Regular NU, NUin, or NUBound. In the end, you finish with the same degree. However, something that parents are finding out is that with NUin and NUBound it's a "pre-matriculation" program. Therefore federal aid can not be used during that year/semester. Also, student loans seem to be harder to get.
This lack of transparency should be criminal. Or at least, you know, make explicitly clear during application process and again in the acceptance letter.
Agree! And this isn't the only school that does this: NYU, W&M, etc. etc.
Also, Colby and Middlebury.
The (big) difference is that most of these schools don't make you go to one of their locations in the fall. You are simply admitted to start in the spring and can do whatever you want for Fall semester.
Well for NEU their marketing machine is all about bringing in the $$ for NEU. In reality it's a brilliant marketing campaign, which apparently many do go for. My own kid said before applying that they didn't want any part of the late start thru anywhere, and happily turned it down when offered.
It's because they want to lock in tuition dollars.
Yes, that's why I do give them credit for their brilliant marketing. I personally don't think they are worth all the hype---my own kid had already decided it wasn't the school for them even before getting NUBound/NUin before they got that acceptance and likely would have turned down even a regular fall start if they'd gotten it. Everything at NEU appears to be all about the $$$. Housing is overcrowded yet they won't allow sophomores out of their on campus housing contracts---Instead they make forced doubles and triples---the forced doubles are in singles that weren't that big and there is only 1 closet for the 2 kids to share and beds must be bunked or lofted. The Forced triples are similar with some having only 60-65sq ft per person. If it wasn't about the money, they would release students from the contracts like so many wanted. They are a well oiled machine, with the most impressive tours. Summer 2021 they were running tours every 30 mins, where most universities had them only 2-5 per day. It's a nice big glossy impressive machine that makes kids want to apply---I mean it's in the heart of Boston, so much more attractive than say RPI/WPI for STEM students. This drives up applications (hello no extra essay!) and thus drives down acceptance rates. With so many applications, I'm guessing there is no way all of the EA/RD apps were actually reviewed properly, so it was a matter of luck or perhaps getting your application in early to get it reviewed (no clue what happened, but I know they couldn't have read 90K applications)
