DC was admitted off of the waitlist for the University of Chicago.
Wow! Congrats. That almost never happens!
We know. Something like 3.5%. It made our week.
How were you informed? Are they finished their WL? My DC is on UChicago's WL and we did not hear anything :(.
The regional admissions rep called DC’s school counselor who called me. I indicated strong interest. The admissions rep then sent an email to DC and called that evening and made the offer. They wanted to know we would accept which we did on the spot. The next day we got an email with details and a requirement for a $500 deposit.
UChicago's yield must have tanked this year. The last thing they want is to send out more offers of admission to wait-listers and have THOSE people say "no". For them to go to the trouble of making direct calls to a wait list kid and school, and then making an exploding verbal offer BEFORE giving the written (real & recorded for USNWR) one shows UChicago's really worried about their yield and the impact on its ranking.
Chicago has done this in prior years. Yes, they care a lot about yield.
