This is fun for me, so without reading all the replies, I'm going to think how this would work without actually just buying, like, 200+ pieces of clothing every year. Everything high-end. 2 Bags-- $4000 3 pair shoes, 2 pair boots-- $3500 3 pair sandals/flats-- $500 2 pieces outerwear-- $2000 1 gown-- $750 2 cocktail dresses-- $1000 1 suit-- $750 2 pair pants-- $500 3 pair jeans-- $500 2 sweaters-- $500 4 blouses-- $750 4 skirts/jumpsuits/rompers/vests-- $750 2 swimsuits + coverup + flip-flops-- $500 2 items casual outerwear (hoodies, etc.)-- $250 6 very casual clothes items (dresses, shorts, tees, etc.)-- $500 4 items athletic wear-- $250 2 pair athletic shoes, 3 items among athletic bras/accessories-- $500 3 bras/8 panties-- $500 2 robes/other lingerie-- $250 2 sleepwear-- $250 6 socks/2 hosiery/2 hats/1 belt-- $500 6 costume jewelry/accessories/winter accessories-- $750 I feel I'm forgetting some things (not counting fine jewelry), but that's $20 large, right there. Like, that's a fair number of clothing items, but like maybe 50 plus 15 accessories or something (I'm not going to count). It's still obscene IMO, especially if you're not high-profile and expected to dress a certain way. But if it were me, and I do love to shop, I could see buying this much in a year-- especially since I recently lost weight. Of course, for me, it would be like... 2 Bags-- $75 3 pair shoes, 2 pair boots-- $200 3 pair sandals/flats-- $100 2 pieces outerwear-- $250 1 gown-- $100 2 cocktail dresses-- $150 1 suit-- $200 2 pair pants-- $100 3 pair jeans-- $200 2 sweaters-- $100 4 blouses-- $200 4 skirts/jumpsuits/rompers/vests-- $150 2 swimsuits + coverup + flip-flops-- $100 2 items casual outerwear (hoodies, etc.)-- $75 6 very casual clothes items (dresses, shorts, tees, etc.)-- $100 4 items athletic wear-- $100 2 pair athletic shoes, 3 items among athletic bras/accessories-- $250 3 bras/8 panties-- $150 2 robes/other lingerie-- $50 2 sleepwear-- $50 6 socks/2 hosiery/2 hats/1 belt-- $100 6 costume jewelry/accessories/winter accessories-- $100 Let's see, that's... $2900 LMAO I have never spent that much on clothing in one year in my LIFE. I do love clothes and I'm trying to select fewer, nicer items (the above numbers are for decent items on clearance), but, uh... I probably spend $1200/year in reality. Wow.
Love this!!! Thanks for putting this in perspective.
Yeah, it's interesting! Upon a recount, it's like... 6 items + a couple of smaller accessories a month? That's not shopaholism, to me. And I think I captured most of the prices pretty accurately and reasonably-- $500 each for high end shoes, average $2000 for a high end bag (not Hermes!), $160 for a pair of jeans, $150+ for running shoes, $180 for a nice blouse or skirt, $85 for a casual dress or nice shorts, $125 for nice PJs, $60 for leggings... It's HIGH, but it's not so wild when you break it down. I: -love fashion -love to shop -am a bargain hunter and -am socialist-leaning So I see the problematics here, but also can totally see how it breaks down and seems "reasonable." If I think just in terms of the sheer amount of clothing I buy in a year (on the low end, because I haven't shopped in person much since COVID, except at the thrift since summer)... -I will totally go to the thrift store on average once a month and get 1-2 items for myself (mostly shop for my kid) -Old Navy or H&M or similar, average 4 items x 4 times a year -Clearance shop Revolve or similar 6 items, 1x/year -Vintage store or eBay/Etsy 3 items 2x/year -Discount/designer store like TJ Maxx or Filene's (RIP!!!!!!) 3 items 2x/year -DSW or online shoe shopping (including running shoes) 2 items 2x/year -Outerwear, accessories, bags someplace 2 items 3x/year -Bras and swimwear and so on, 2 items 2x/year -Special shopping trip for some special event, 3 items 2x/year Let me add that up and it's... wow, it's 66-78 items per year! It's basically the same as my hypothetical rich person! And all that looks like is basically... In an average month: -1-2 items at the thrift store plus -One trip to another store to buy 2-4 items Plus, per year: -1 online shopping "spree" (6 items) -2 trips to shop for a special event and buy like 3 items (dress, shoes, accessory) That's... more items than many people buy, but not really so outrageous IMO. Huh. Well, that's enough procrastinating, lol. Back to work.
