This is just ONE of many factors that will go into his acceptance.

It is good (and I think you know that) but is GPA is even  more important. Rigor of classes. EC's High school.

Agree. Have a DC with a 34 ACT, but a 3.5 unweighted GPA, no honors classes (only offered for math/science but not in strengths - English/history/language). Hard to get DC to factor GPA in the search when there is a 34 ACT. Probably overshooting with the list.[/quote]

PP, I agree: my kid seems to be using test score as a defining part of the search bc it feels more black and white.

FWIW, I find the idea of bragging on DCurbanmom a little funny - why would anyone spend time bragging (or caring) on an anonymous website?  I have told you practically nothing about my kid - as you noted, nothing about HS rigor, grades or ECs, so how could it be a brag?  If you read my other posts, I really was a little confused about this score - mostly by this board, frankly, which keeps highlighting 2021 admissions data that says how much test scores have creeped up over the past year.  There also seems to be division on whether 34 is a solid score to get a kid considered or if you need a 35 at tops schools.  There seems to be a lot of disagreement about a 34.  Some posters practically say state flagship only while others tell your kid to throw their hat in the ring at a top 25 university. And, i don't mean that in a judgmental way both top-rated schools and "low" rated schools can be great experiences.  I was simply trying to get some helpful color on recent trends before talking to the college counselor at kid's school, but I suppose that is really the only way to get reliable info (though there have been folks who have tried honestly help, and thank you to those people).[/quote]

Talk with your counselor about Naviance or whatever the equivalent is.  If your kid is aiming for a top school, then yes, retest.  A34 is the median for the entering class of UVA last year.  The elite SLACs and top schools will want to see that and notwithstanding what others have said, a 35 or 36 does put you in a different "pile".  And merit money may come your way.  But if your child is not interested in tutoring and retesting then talk to your ocunselor about a range of schools that will be delighted with the 34 and his GPA and other stuff and apply early and widely.  On the other hand, if you are a URM, first-generation, low-income, etc. etc., your son may do very well with the 34.  Really, only your counselor and the Naviance charts will tell you.[/quote]

Multiple posts on why 2021 stats aren’t particularly relevant, 34 was 75th percentile for uva 2020-2018.
