At almost 40, I do not sit in my husband's lap. And yes, we love each other - just not in a "bid daddy" and "little woman" sort of way. We love each other as equals. Sitting on someone's lap is just a little "parrent/child" which is why I find it weird. But hey, if it works for you, go for it. I'm sure we all do things other's find weird.
This is how I feel too. We hold hands, put arms around shoulders, are affectionate, but the whole sitting on his lap thing feels too much like a big daddy/little woman thing. It doesn't bother me at all when others do it (actually, I don't think I've seen anyone do that in years) but if I did, I would just think she's a bit submissive and he exerts the "I'm man of the house" vibe. But it doesn't bother me at all to see. WRT sitting on the same side of the booth. It's odd if you're in the booth next to theirs and they're sitting on the side that has them facing you. You feel like you have an audience watching you -- why sit on the same side? Doesn't it strain your neck to look at each other? I'd much prefer to be looking at my DH while we're talking rather than feel his leg and shoulder rubbing up against me. It's not even affectionate touching, it's just sitting next to each other.
