So do you all seriously think that Columbia is now a "better" school than it was last year just because of the ranking shuffle? All of these schools that go up or down a few spots are essentially the same schools that they were a year ago.
Definitely better than it was 40 years ago, when it was the least desirable of the Ivies and ranked in the teens (and it was all-male too), and undergrad is probably on par with HYPSM now (or getting marginally close). Academically, it has been producing a few Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Churchill, Truman, and Udall scholars per year as of late (in the past there was almost none). Athletics is on the rise and constantly winning a couple ivy championships and NCAA titles per year (esp. fencing). Beats most of the schools except HYS and Penn in terms of "Forbes 30 under 30" entrepreneurs and # of billionaires. Graduated tons of Academy/Pulitzer/Emmy/McArthur award winners just in the past 20-30 years and even Nobel Prize winners when you look at undergrad degrees alone. And recent cabinet members, federal judges, supreme court justices, Fortune 500 CEOS, you name it. Probably not on the level of HYS but definitely more so than most other schools. Also a top destination of elite prep schools. Rivals HYPSWharton in terms of finance or consulting recruiting in NY and is one of the few places where hedge funds, private equity, trading firms recruits straight out of undergrad. Ranks 3rd/4th in feeding for top law schools like YLS and HLS. Lots of celebrity offspring/rich kids that rival Y or P but also generous FA to most students and is one of the few schools outside HYP that meets 100% demonstrated need even for internationals and the undocumented. Regardless of a low alumni donation rate, still one of the top fundraisers in the country following H and S (raising between $700 mil -$1 billion on average). Building a $6 billion new campus in Manhattan. Don't know what other quantifiable metrics you can use to define "better." Probably will even get rid of the ED in favor of SCEA in the next 5 years.
