NP. The long and the short of it is that I will not bring my dog anywhere that has a “no dogs” sign. I will, however, bring my dog anywhere that I am permitted. A lot of people on this thread seem to think that dogs should not be brought within 100 yards of a school. This is ridiculous. Any sidewalk, even directly in front of a school, is public property and thus completely within the limits of acceptable dog presence. Rather than wringing your hands about your children being scared of dogs, focus on helping your children learn to deal with dogs. Simultaneously, more owners should train their dogs better. But in the long run, dogs aren’t going anywhere and your dislike/fear of them isn’t going to change that.
No one, and I mean no one, has suggested dogs should be allowed "within 100 yards" of a school. The sidewalk outside a school is different from bring the dog onto the playground or school property where kids and families are gathering and may linger to speak to a teacher, fill out paperwork, have a play date, etc. Standing outside a school with your dog, a reasonable distance from other families so it's easy for anyone with an issue to avoid you, doesn't sound like it's the problem. The problem is people entering school grounds with a dog and assuming everyone is okay with it. Also, it's the beginning of the school year, during a pandemic. My kid does have a strong fear of dogs and it is absolutely something we're working on. With trusted dogs whose owners we know, in settings where we have some control over when we can leave or how our kid interacts with the dog. When people bring their dogs to pickup, it doesn't help socialize my kid to dogs. It would be like me bringing my kid to a dog park to help you socialize your dog to children. I don't take my kid to dog parks because that doesn't make sense. And I don't expect dog owners to stay off the sidewalk or not bring their dogs to outdoor patios or parks. But schools aren't for dogs. They are for kids. I think it's reasonable to say "know what, some kids just can't deal with dogs so lets keep the dogs away from this building FOR KIDS." The entitlement from dog owners in this thread is gross and is basically why people get upset about dogs in the first place.
