For an anti gun ownership kind of city, there is remarkably little reaction to actual gun crime
We’ll every time we pass gun control laws, Congress overturns them.
Do you have examples in the last decade? Can you cite which laws concerning sentencing for gun crime were reduced by Congress? I see none at all. The courts did nix DC total ban, even for law abiding citizens, who have had full background check, fingerprints, and training, who were banned from having even a revolver in a gun safe, which was a patently unconistutional DC law. But where the rubber hits the road is gun crimes. It is the hard left constantly fighting for lower sentences and less prosecution of gun crimes in DC, for the really dangerous crime, the ones where people get injured or killed 1) FELON IN POSESSION, ADW and other violent crimes. https://www.npr.org/2021/04/12/986537208/advocates-say-how-gun-crimes-are-charged-in-washington-d-c-is-a-civil-rights-iss https://wtop.com/dc/2020/04/dc-attorney-general-opposes-prosecution-of-local-gun-cases-in-federal-court/
So true..we had to bend over backwards for a firearm permit, meanwhile actual illegal use.of firearms is barely glanced at in DC .
Yep. DC only cares about preventing legal gun ownership.
It does seem that way. I don't mind that we had to jump through lots of hoops to legally obtain and register our gun, it should be that way everywhere. But the gun control righteousness does ring hollow when DC routinely pleads down/dismisses illegal firearms used in the commission of crimes. Isn't that another side.of gun control - to strongly disincentive gun.crimes through criminal.penalties?. Makes no sense to me!
I favor strict gun safety and registration laws. That said, I read that a lot of the gun prosecutions in DC are of otherwise law-abiding people from other states with looser gun laws who out of habit bring their guns into the District, without necessarily knowing about DC's strict gun laws. They might be reported by a staff member in a hotel, for example. Even if they plea and don't get jail time, the conviction screws up their employment and costs thousands of dollars in legal fees and court costs. Yet someone can commit a crime with an illegal gun, and especially if they're a juvenile, they effectively get off from real penalties. They have a public defender and their record is sealed.
