Why would SYC not share the path to MLS Next for the boys, as McLean is doing for the girls?
Because the “sharing” is just through the alliance and the creation of Virginia Union and only for ECNL. Both clubs were clear that the clubs will keep their separate identities and run separately outside of that... SYC will of course keep their best players for MLS Next. SYC probably applied for full pathway not knowing if they’d get approved. They wanted to have something to offer U15 and older and did the alliance with McLean so they could offer ECNL. All SYC will throw McLean’s way now are second tier players.
I wonder if McLean will pull out now (or just not take SYC players or use SYC coaches for ECNL). It seems like they gain nothing from this alliance
No. SYC is offering this opportunity to McLean Boys ECNL teams as well. If you check out tryout schedule for ECNL and MLSNext at least for 03/04, they are at same time same field (in locations in McLean and Springfield)
Allowing them to tryout for MLS Next team is different from taking them on the team. And is it fair that SYC keeps MLS Next but McLean had to turn over their slot to this alliance? I call foul
