I disagree. Gender is a construct, but not one were eliminating anytime soon. Also, even if you have everyone unisex names, people would immediately create gendered nicknames. It’s just extremely human to categorize people.

I do think it’s useful to consider the range of people your kid could grow up to be. We gave our daughter a feminine name, but considered how it could be shortened for both ver girly and more unisex or even masculine names. And we use both nicknames with her (though she currently prefers the girly one). She was born a girl and that means something (less than some people think, but still something) and our goal with her name was to help give her the start of an identity without confining her in it.

I think strictly unisex names would be as confine for many as very masculine or feminine names. Not everyone wants to be unisex, and expressing your gender via your name can be useful and powerful.[/quote]
