Somewhat off topic, but why is there so much Jennifer Lawrence hate on this board? I’m not a fan, particularly, but in the few interviews of hers I’ve seen I think she comes off as agreeable and charming...
My DH can’t stand her. I find her a little over the top sometimes but he absolutely loathes her. Thinks she’s super fake and trying to come off like “just a regular girl!” even though obviously she is not average or regular in any way. He has a thing about people downplaying their assets or good fortune to be likable. I get it, but she doesn’t bother me. But I have a similar thing with Taylor Swift. Her appearance and demeanor read 100% as “rich mean girl from high school who made fun of other girls for having the wrong clothes” so when she’s like “I’m just a nerd hanging out with my best gal pals!” who all happen to be rich, famous, and equally beautiful, I get ver triggered.
I have never been able to articulate my disdain for Taylor before. Thank you for the gift of these words. I'll be sharing them with the Swifties in my life.
My thing with Taylor Swift is that while I don’t love her personally her talent is SO immense - for songwriting, for singing (in a pop way, not necessarily the best vocally), staying on top for as long as she has while remaining mostly sane (unlike so many who started you g and cracked up) .... etc. she’s really the only one of her generation who has pulled it off, and I have grudging respect for it.
I am the PP who mentioned I dislike her and I agree with this. One thing that helped me get TSwift is learning that her parents are finance people and she grew up in that world. She's obviously an excellent businesswoman and really understands her own appeal and how to connect with her fans. Even though I don't like her, I generally don't hate on her because I agree you have to respect it. She mostly only annoys me when I meet a big TSwift fan who wants to tell me what an amazing person she is. It's amazing to me. I"m like... you get that's just marketing, right? Like all these anecdotes about what an amazing friend she is (to other famous women) or how nice she is to her fans (who are the whole reason she's successful) are planted in the media by her publicity team specifically to make you idolize her? It's one thing if its some teenager thinking this but I've met women in their 30s who talk about TSwift like she's the second coming and it grates. I did enjoy the summer she dated Tom Hiddleston though. It was very weird and awkward and felt super manufactured and I enjoyed it immensely. That's just the kind of weird, probably transparently career-driven, celebrity pairing that will convince me to buy an Entertainment Weekly and I love it.
