<<hazing is prevalent in just about every club or organization in college>> But times they are a changing, despite attitudes like yours. Hazing is illegal. Schools get in BIG trouble (think 60 minutes) when they are associated with such activities. More and more schools are RUNNING the other way from this sick/bootcamp/mentality. On most of the tours my DC went on, they made a point to distance themselves from fraternities, and other clubs that were not open to all members. So, you need to get some new material.
There's no sense of accomplishment or triumph that comes from joining a club that any old loser can join. What's next, jobs that hire everyone who applies? Rejection and exclusion will always be part of life. You can send your kid to a woke college where everyone holds hands and sings campfire songs, but you can't shield them from this basic fact of life forever.
Genuine question since I did not go to college in the US. How does getting into a club translate into an accomplishment or triumph? Does the fraternity give out scholarships or otherwise make the college process more affordable? Would like to understand..
National Offices of the greek houses do often scholarships sometimes. Also if you hold an office position, it can be good for applications to other schools/jobs. Also, there is usually lots of community service done (at least on my campus). And it doesn't always cost a ton of money to join. I was dirt poor but was able to join by working in the house kitchen (cleaning up/prepping meals). As for "any loser can join comments", I find that interesting. There is a week long rush (at least on the campus I was on), including review of recommendations and applications. I believe it is even more extensive now (looking at Social Media, submitting transcripts, etc.) So that comment is factually incorrect. And, strangely, at odds with the usual complaint that greek houses are too exclusive. So which is it folks? Look, I was in a sorority. I liked it, didn't love it. I certainly abided by their rules but I did not follow lock step. Some did, some didn't. And am ambivalent if my kid joins a greek house. But some of you folks commenting here clearly have ZERO experience with being in a greek house.
I think you misread the comment you're responding to here. PP was saying they prefer frats/sororities to other campus clubs precisely BECAUSE not just any loser can join.
