Wow. Some of you are discussing abusing your own children on this thread; you should be aware that IP addresses are traceable and you're admitting a crime. I happen to think that spanking is wrong, but I realize it is not illegal. This kind of abuse is not just obviously wrong, it is illegal in every state. The judge has admitted that he is the man in the video. This whole thing is just so terribly sad. That child and any siblings must have grown up in such intense and terrible fear. I hope this man and the woman in the picture are both brought to justice. The child apparently defends her mother's role, and says she also was abused, but still. Failure to protect is a crime, too.
Who's admitting to abusing their children? Are you referring to parents who spank? Are you calling them abusers? If so, you're irrational and absurd.
There have been several posters on here who say they have "spanked" their children with belts, and that they don't see anything wrong with this type of "spanking" as seen here on the video, and in fact would / have "spanked" their kids like this. Hitting with a belt is illegal in most states - certainly hitting in this fashion is illegal everywhere. And it's obviously wrong. I am a Christian (not all of us are violent!). To those spankers who are Christian, and think that it is okay to hit a child this way, just remember that god is watching.
Sorry, you're wrong. I'm the poster who said she would spank her teenager (which would probably never happen, because they are well-behaved). However, you glossed over the fact that I mentioned that I would never verbally abuse my child in this way and I would not spank him/her for this duration. On the few occasions when I've used a belt, it was 4-5 swipes at most and my children were in the 9-11 age range....I don't believe hitting a child with your hand at this age is acceptable. And I will state again that I do feel that the guy went over the top with his verbal abuse and the prolonged spanking. Re: your God reference. Please see Proverbs 13:24.
"Christian" parents guilty of violence against their children have used this misinterpretation of the good book for years, but it's just wrong. The "rod" in question in that oft-quoted proverb is thought to be a rod like a shepherds staff, used to guide sheep; in either case, it is a metaphor. In no way is it meant as a rod to strike and injure a child. http://www.parentingbythebook.com/Proverbs-1324.html
See, this type of statement is why this can never be an educated debate. Anti-spanking folks are way too dramatic and over the top in their stances. Who is talking about harming their child? There is a difference between spanking as a discipline tool and physical abuse.
Are you the poster who is bragging about hitting her kids with a belt? Considering we are discussing this in a context of an actual beating that only a few lunatics fail to discern from a routine "spanking," I think most of us are talking about instances where the child is harmed. Frankly, I'd argue that a child is harmed by any type of spanking. I'm unapologetically anti-spanking. But hitting your children with a belt can injure them and cause physical damage, not just mental and emotional damage. I think the reason this can never be an educated debate is that there is nothing of intellectual or philosophical merit in your side of the story. Period.
No, I think the reason this can never be an educated debate is because you exaggerate to buttress your argument. There was no bragging about using a belt. And I'm a poster who stated that I'm okay with spanking absent the verbal abuse and duration shown in this video. Why are you glossing over this distinction?
You are making my point instead of your own. I don't need to read you the fine print. You think it is okay to hit a child with a belt. It's not.
It's not a cut-and-dry issue. Anything in excess is a problem. And I have a feeling when you say child, you're talking about young kids (younger than 9/10)....that's not my argument at all. But let's just agree to disagree. We'll never see eye to eye and I'm not interested in continuing the debate...we'll never find a middle ground.
