Will the holistic review of top 100 students be race-blind? Otherwise, FCPS will pick the top 100 from URM. It’s all about race and politics. TJ will be doomed under the administration of stupid Brabrand.

The top 100 is not the top 100 as in the most gifted or intelligent. This reads as though it's 100 seats set aside where they can take into account socioeconomic factors and underrepresented middle schools etc. In other words, 100 seats set aside to make sure they can get more URMs in the class and take the luck of the lottery out of the equation when it comes to certain groups they want in the class.
Seems like it's both. Sounds like they want to use the top 100 to catch the truly gifted students. Then they want to use the remaining top 100 to catch the most qualified URMs they can find to fix their numbers. Says it right there on slide 14. But you're right. This change is all about race.

Race isn’t one of the explicit factors used for the top 100, but they are using SES and underrepresented sending schools as a proxy for race. They even mention that one of the pros of the new system is that it should admit more URMs. It’s clearly about race. They will use the top 100 to make sure the geniuses get in and then use the rest to admit as many URMs as they can. Then the lottery will ensure not too many Asians will get in.

There's nothing wrong in principle with making sure that underserved students are properly served, and making sure that admissions tests which dubiously measure merit do a better job of measuring merit. The notion that elite intellect is color-blind and that it's the school system's responsibility to reflect the fact is a legitimate and noble one. It's no secret that capable URMs would be reticent to take part in elite programs if they feel like they're the "only ones" there. However, I don't think the answer is to go away from the direction of STEM merit-based measures, and to accuse those who endorse them as being racist and entitled. We won't know racism and entitlement until we start seeing the kids of school board members and politicians getting holistically admitted into a watered-down TJ and AAP because of the college admissions boost and intellectual authority it's nevertheless still able to summon, while the Asian-Americans, Eastern Europeans immigrants, and 99-percenter nerds who used to view those spots as a bastion of fairness would begin to wallow unchallenged and academically underserved, while routinely facing discrimination for being "different."
“that capable URMs would be reticent to take part in elite programs if they feel like they're the "only ones" there” ? You’ve got to be kidding me. My Asian children were the “only ones” in their school before TJ, and most likely will be the “ only ones” after TJ for the rest of their lives. Anybody plan to help?
