You realize that abbreviations are only helpful in context right? If you live in another place that has a reason to use the abbreviation DC for someplace else, then Washington DC will not be the reference that comes to mind. In other regions, people hear DC and they'll think of Daly City, Dodge City, Detroit City, Dartmouth College, and many more local references. It only means Washington DC here in this region. Outside this region, you need to say Washington DC or you will lose the context. It has nothing to do with needing to get additional references. Contrary to your small bubble view of the world, Washington DC is not the only or most frequently used reference for the abbreviation DC in all areas of the nation.
Look, you can make excuses for other ppl who clearly haven’t read a book, looked at a map, learned government and history in school or been anywhere. You think I live in bubble bc you are condescending and believe you know everything, you don’t. Like I said, I’ve been to the West Coast and have yet to encounter someone who was confused what DC meant without me having to say Washington.
Wait...you think that anyone who doesn't live in this area and doesn't automatically equate DC with Washington DC is a backwards hick who needs to open a book, turn on a television or look at a map and I'm the one who is condescending? Thank you Ms. Pot. And while you may have met a lot of people who may understand your context of DC meaning Washington DC, there are still many people out there, and not necessarily uneducated or ignorant people who don't automatically connect the abbreviation DC with Washington DC. You are the condescending one if you truly thinks that people who don't automatically understand your context when you use an abbreviation are uneducated and yes, you live in a bubble where the common usage of DC only refers to Washington DC when there are many places in the US where DC has a local reference that is more commonly used and they refer to the nation's capitol as Washington DC instead of just DC. Just because you've been to a few places on the West Coast where this doesn't hold true does not make it universal.
