My mother slapped me across the face a few times, including when I was a teen.  She also mentally and verbally abused me, calling me all kinds of names.  If she had only just spanked me with an open hand on the bottom, I think it would not have phased me. But the slap across the face, and other stuff that I recall, and the verbal abuse have stayed with me.

Yup- spanking isn't great parenting, and I'm glad that it's on the way out, but a slap across the face is deeply degrading--I think it should be considered emotional abuse because of the lasting hurt that it causes.
