DP: If your kids are really academically capable as you say they are, and they are still not secure in their own abilities, you might want to consider the possibility that the problem is with your parenting skills. Why do you and your kids worry about if other kids are working until 1 am? Or, since you also say that your kids are logging "SERIOUS" hours, may be they only "seem" capable and got into the magnets only because of those "SERIOUS" hours? In which case, you are also a hypocrite. Sounds to me you are concern trolling to make up for your own lack of parenting skills. And, you commenting on someone else rambling is pretty rich.
I'm not that PP, but I'm guessing it's because it leads to an arms race, basically. Some parents expect their kids to do X, then other parents start thinking that maybe their kids are supposed to be doing X, then lots of parents think that their kids are supposed to be doing X because everybody else is doing it, and soon basically you gotta do it or be the only one who isn't. It's pernicious.
That is YOUR issue. Not anyone else’s. I have a kid at the CES. I really and truly don’t care how much time other kids are spending on their work. And I tell my kid the same thing. If she’s doing her best and getting decent grades, IDGAF about other people’s kids. Some parents buy their kids an iPhone X and some parents let their kids play Grand Theft Auto and some spend thousands of dollars on swim team every year. Glad it works for them but it’s not our choice. We all make different choices at parents.
No, really, it is everyone's, because we all live in society. Most parents don't buy their kids an iPhone X, but every kid in your kid's class is going to have a smart phone - within a year or two. It's one thing to do your own thing when everyone is making different choices, but it's quite another to do your own thing when almost everyone is making the same choice that is different from yours. If you haven't experienced this yet as a parent, you will soon.
