OP here..Yes, I agree that it is not the school's fault. And Thank you for putting it kindly.

I did speak with the bus driver today and asked him to drop kids back at school if I am not there and he was okay with it (I am the main pickup person and after this I know I wont be making the same mistake twice and will be there early, but you never know if circumstances change).

A lot of people have given good suggestions - I went over with my kids what to do if I am not there. Which neighbor's house to go to, what to do. A month ago I was late and made it just as the bus took off. I had casually asked my kids what they would do if I wasn't there and they said they would walk home and I said yes. I really didn't go into it since I thought I will never be late to pick up anymore. I didn't think I'd forget a half day, but stuff happens and I'm glad my kids remembered what to do.

I was worried what they would have done if I was not home. Now they know what to do in that situation too..This has been an eye opener for me and I am glad that it made me come up with plans with kids when things are out of the norm, not just at bus drop off, but other situations too.
