It's definitely a trend. It's being promoted heavily by the powerful gay lobby, which lost its major fundraising hook when the Supreme Court approved gay marriage. There is little scientific evidence to support the idea that humans can change genders but whatever....
You are an ignorant moron
You sure did a bang up job of refuting their points. First PP, if you separate the gay movement from the transgender movement, I think you'll find that the transgender movement has been lumped in with the gay movement and is being promoted by (typically, older white biological men who feel they are women) a transgender "lobby." Although, I'd be more inclined to use the word "movement." I know a number of lesbians who are feeling pushed out of the LGB(T) umbrella, especially with the recent claims that a lesbian who isn't sexually interested in a transgender woman is a bigot and should be shamed out of the tent. There is also some concern that younger, lesbian women, particularly those who would have been considered "butch" are being encouraged to recognize themselves as "transgender" instead. And that gay people are being encouraged to identify as straight transgender people, especially in more conservative areas (much like the countries where gay people are forced to live as the opposite sex or as a third sex, because homosexuality is anathema). It is entirely possible to change presentation, which some people commonly use the word "gender" for. It is not possible to change one's sex. One can change one's appearance cosmetically, but it doesn't change the underlying reality.
