Lifelong Catholic here. And I think I’ve now reached my breaking point. I feel like it’s a betrayal of my family and culture and history to leave my faith but... I am so disgusted every time this happens. I’m not sure I can reconcile this all in my mind “one more time”. Heartbreaking for these children ...
I reached my limit about two years ago - when my son was in first grade and realized I just didn't feel safe or comfortable sending him to CCD. What kind of religion/faith is it if you can't trust them to help you teach your children the faith?
CCD does not seem risky. It is a volunteer teacher - mostly moms - who is not a priest. It is a classroom full of kids and the teacher is never alone with any individual child.
Right - I wasn't specifically worried about abuse happening in the middle of that CCD class, but it was the first time I would be sending him to church alone, and it gave me pause. And I started thinking about his future religious ed - would I let him be an alter boy? Would I let him go on the middle school retreat? Would I interview every CCD teacher he has? Would I let him join the choir? And then it dawned on me - why in the universe would I be raising my child in a religious community that has repeatedly demonstrated that I can't trust them?
