46. So depressed. Wife worked 10 yrs but now does occasional real estate deals so single income of $130k. 2 kids. Net worth 1 million + $300k in house.
You're depressed bc $1.3 mil NW before age 50 or $1 mil w/o real estate is sooooo bad??
My salary won't go up that much and with 2 kids 1 million isn't enough. A huge recession is on the horizon. People here with 10 million NW.
Right but you're 46, not 66. "Huge" recession? The last huge recession technically lasted 19 months. Sure times were tough for a long time thereafter, but the market started recovering long before the job market, housing etc. and S&P was up 26% in 2009, 15% in 2010 and has been positive thereafter, more than making up for the 37% decline in 2008. You really don't think you can even get a 5% return yearly (on average) for the next 9 yrs? Bc assuming you're holding 900k of that $1 mil in the market and you d put in another dollar, by age 55 you're up at $1.39 million. And what is the chance that you aren't going to put another $ into investments starting now? I just don't see how these numbers are bad for a single earner 130k household. Why compare with the DCUM folks with $10 mil NW, why not compare to Warren Buffett's $82bil NW to really make yourself depressed?
