I know I'm old school, but the stuttering and the "like" and "uh" filler words really bother me. I definitely do this myself, but I believe that news anchors and reporters should still hold themselves to a higher standard. I don't remember Bob Edwards using filler words.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this! I have listened to NPR since the 80s and it was so professional. Now? What IS up with the 'hmmmmm's', 'huh', etc. during a guest's talking?? It is SO distracting!! And how about when they talk WAY up high at the end of their questions? (David Greene, Steve Inskeep - many others)? I can't stand Rachel Martin - over the top dramatic voice (when called for) and that cutesy voice - SO irritating plus her CONSTANT hmmmm's and huh's . . . between Steve Inskeep's giggling and all the of the rest - I can barely listen anymore. Bob Edwards and Diane Rehm were such class acts . . I still miss them. But there are a handful that still have that air of professionalism about them - otherwise I wouldn't listen at ALL.
