We are fully into the territory of illegal activity, so the FBI would be obligated to act regardless of what Trump or the GOP wanted. It now involves Trump's own son, so Trump can't make him fall on his sword. And it involves Manafort, so they can't claim ignorance. The remaining defenses are the kind you would use in court.
