DH and I use this to refer to our 2 year old twins. It helps "distinguish" them in conversation since we have a 5 and 7 year old too. "I drop the 'littles' off as soon as I get Mary and Susan on the bus". "DH, can you grab the littles' jackets from the closet before leaving the house?"
ditto. I'm a mom of 4 with youngest twins and I also sometimes say littles instead of Mary and Johnny. Frankly, with 4 kids, I can barely get a full sentence out before someone is yelling over me, so I try to use as few words as possible. My voice is hoarse most of the time from overuse and repeating myself to my kids. Believe me, it's not a "crunchy" or elitist thing for most of the big families I know who say it. Its a survival thing so parents can save their voices. I have also become the mom who has to rattle off several kids names before my brain finds the right one. Luckily, on my job with civilized adults who don't scream all day long, I can speak in full coherent sentences.
