VA Tech Common Data Set 2015-16: SAT (25/75) M 560/670, CR 540/640, W 530/630 76% had 3.75 and above 39% in top 10% of class *Unless OP's kid is looking at the engineering school which typically on the higher end of these stats, I'd say VT is a match.
The CDS for VT really doesn't apply to Northern VA high schools where the stats needed for acceptance are higher. I would say a 3.8 weighted would be the bare minimum, but the average accepted from my kids' HS is a 4.0. My DC had a weighted 3.4 and didn't even bother applying to VT, but got into schools like University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and Indiana University, Bloomington, which are similarly ranked (DC's ACT was in top 25% for those schools). + 1. It is very difficult to get into UVA, in particular, and William & Mary Tech from FCPS and other counties in No. Va. You have a much better chance of applying from anywhere else. Several of my DD's friends who really wanted GMU did not get in and were devastated because they were counting on it. You can't count on getting into any of the Va schools if applying from Mclean or Langley They can take only a few kids from each school. Our counselor (FCPS) wouldn't even consider putting DD up for UVA - the school supports only the very best students for that.

At W-L, 90 kids were accepted at Virginia Tech last year our out of 125 applicants (72%). UVA- 48 accepted with 140 applied (34%), William & Mary - 35/88 (40%). Certainly, there is self-selection as to who applies but it's more than a "few" that get in.
+1. I don't know why people are so convinced that it is impossible to get into UVA and W&M from NoVA high schools. The stats show otherwise.
Those stats are amazing. My Junior DD has her heart set on UVA unfortunately the acceptance rate from her nova private is nowhere close- maybe 15%.
