I Am Here to Refuse the Genocide”: Two Israeli Teens Get Prison Terms for Draft Resistance HEADLINEAUG 01, 2025 https://www.democracynow.org/2025/8/1/headlines/i_am_here_to_refuse_the_genocide_two_israeli_teens_get_prison_terms_for_draft_resistance Antiwar Israelis held a protest outside a military recruitment center in Ramat Gan Thursday in support of two 18-year-old draft resisters who announced they would refuse to enlist in Israel’s army. Ayana Gerstmann was sentenced to 30 days in a military prison for her refusal; Yuval Peleg received a 20-day sentence. Ayana Gerstmann: “I can’t be a part of the war in Gaza, of the misery and suffer caused to so many people.” Yuval Peleg: “I am here to refuse the genocide, first and foremost, to refuse to participate and to be complicit in genocide.”
That’s not a long prison term for conscientious objectors. Good for them for following their conscience rather than taking part in the intentional starvation of children.
I wonder how many young people will start leaving Israel rather than serve military service during this awful war.
Practically none. It's their country. They can vote in different politicians if they want to. Their primary goal is national security, not evading military service. Most consider that their national security is best served by eliminating threats to their homeland, an entirely reasonable notion.
They are not leaving because they have tried and been barred from leaving Israel. Netanyahu has ordered airlines to ban Israeli ch citizens from flying out of the country. https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2025-06-16/ty-article/.premium/israel-prohibits-airlines-from-letting-israeli-citizens-leave-the-country/00000197-7854-d3ff-a7bf-7cd4b67d0000
Wouldn't matter anyway, no more than a few Americans hiding in Canada during the Vietnam War had any impact on anything.
Why aren’t young Americans Jews going to fight for Netanyahu?
Why would they lift a finger to back up their talk? Our government here in the U.S. coddles them, does everything imaginable to validate their bizarre superiority complex, provides them with Jewish affirmative action when they seek admission to America’s top universities, and casts them as victims when they blatantly instigate conflicts with protesters on college campuses. Don’t believe the people shrieking that anti-semitism is threatening to exterminate Jews. The reality is that no other group is afforded more protection and special treatment than this group.
