Why do you think it is odd that a large proportion are men aged 20-30? I'm afraid you are showing your ignorance as it has always been that way.  A difficult and dangerous journey is not easily undertaken by older people or children. There can be additional dangers for young women and those who are 20-30 often already have children.  My 19 year old father escaped from a communist country in the 1950s.  He was prepared to leave his family and trekked for days through snow-covered mountains before ending up n a refugee camp.  Even if the trek is not so dangerous, it's not so easy to uproot an entire family for an uncertain future. Who is to care for elderly parents left at home? It is quite common for a young man to go on his own and try to earn money so he can send it home to support his family.[/quote]

Agree. Most immigrant records I’ve researched dating back to the mid-1800s to mid-1900s were for people mostly in their 20s and 30s. Even friends, colleagues and acquaintances I know often came initially for grad school and then returned to the US for good. [/quote]

The young illegal immigrant we are helping is age 30 from Colombia. He is married with two young girls. He thought the journey was very dangerous. He said no way would he subject his daughters to crossing the Rio Grande and traveling the way he did.

I also know a Haitian woman in her 40's.  She was living in Brazil with her boyfriend also Haitian and she had not been able to get work for 4 years in Brazil. She became pregnant. At 3 months pregnant she and her boyfriend joined a caravan for the US.
She reached the US (Arizona border) at 8-1/2 months pregnant. Her sister, a Haitian Marylander, told her to get to the nearest airport in Arizona and sister would buy her a plane ticket to Maryland. Sister bought a one way ticket to Maryland and it cost around $800.  Baby was born in Maryland several weeks later and is a US citizen. That was an incredible journey while pregnant.[/quote]
