While parents have the right to make important decisions about their children's lives, they also have certain legal duties. Parents are legally required to support their minor children. Supporting your kids includes providing food, clothing, shelter, and basic care. Failing to provide for your kids can lead to neglect or abuse charges in most states. You do “own” your child. You are legally responsible for your child and your child’s body, wellbeing, etc, for 18 years. Failing to care for your child is against the law.
If you owned your child, the state couldn't take your child from you for failure to care for them properly. The state can intervene specifically because you do not "own" your child. Your child is an independent human being with their own rights independent of their parents.
And that’s why when a pregnant woman is murdered it’s double homicide. Or if a pregnant woman loses her baby because of another person’s interference with bad intent, violence, poisoning, etc. Unborn babies have rights also.
Do they have the right not to be jailed along with their mother? Do they have the right to be in the HOV lane? What rights do babies actually born have? Do they have the right to not live in poverty?
