I'd love to know why the friend group chose her instead of Brandon. (Assuming they did--they may well have separate pizza nights and outings with him.) My guess is they felt like he was the bad guy in the breakup (which he was, undoubtedly) but they may be second guessing their choice three years on. Maybe Jen was a lot more tolerable when she was married, maybe she didn't suck up all the oxygen in every room, and maybe if you just hang out and eat pizza, she's super fun. Maybe. But she doesn't seem like someone you'd want to hang around now.
I cannot be certain but after meeting Brandon and Tina while on our vacation in Mexico I can tell you my perspective changed on the whole situation. As embarrassing as this is to say, I was a Hatmaker fan for years and stayed on the Jen train post divorce until recently. Of course I didn’t mention that I already knew who he was before “meeting” them in the pool. But let me tell you, Tina looks just like her pictures and she is what Jen would describe as “just precious”. I tried to dig for some gossip but she wasn’t about spilling anything other than she loves him dearly and all of his children. She seemed genuine and down to earth. Part of me feels guilty for knowing who they were and not letting them know but I figured I could learn more that way. Get the true Hatmaker. It was the last day of our trip so I didn’t see them after the pool. I was convinced he was an alcoholic and just a mess. I did not witness that at all. While talking about her step children Tina told us his son had just got engaged and that he and Tina were asked to attend but they could not change the trip dates. She really didn’t say anything else about the kids. I asked if she got along with “ the ex” and her reply was that they’ve never met but she didn’t have anything else to say, nothing. I didn’t want to push the subject because I didn’t want them knowing I knew all of these answers already. Or thought I did. She said they met at a local bar and had mutual friends. And I still cannot believe she is 50. So she’s not the girl he had the affair with. Brandon was very attentive to her and she to him. My whole opinion has changed and now I’m off the Jen take my coffee black gay boyfriend me camp holding my phone 3 feet in the air to look skinny train. Single mom my ass. Between his podcast and our personal encounter my mind is made up. If I can think of anything else I’ll gladly reply. My husband spoke with Brandon as well. Same conclusion.
I'm not sure whether to be appalled at your creepiness- why would you not just tell her you recognized them and let them know it's nice to get to meet them in person?!- or impressed with Tina's choice to take the high road. If someone had fished for that much information from me, my radar would've been way up. She could've easily spilled all the tea and then some and she chose to simply give you general answers and not say anything derogatory about Jen. That is just pure class all the way. And who knows what Brandon actually did to perpetrate the divorce, aside from cheating (which I'm not excusing), but based on their social media behavior, one could imagine that he simply stubbed Jen's toe and I believe she would still whip out the victim card and play it until the table burns up and everyone goes home. Brandon and Tina are clearly playing the long game/high road and I'm 100% in their corner for that.
