I don’t understand how it can take so long, even if they have to fulfill paperwork. I was looking up the forms and apparently is just guilty or not guilty options. Can someone explain what happens in the room with the jury that they would spend hours on it ?
I served on a jury in Fairfax County a few years ago. The man was on trial for possession of drugs with the intent to distribute. The trial lasted two days. We first had to pick our foreman. That alone took probably at least 15 minutes. We did ask to see some of the evidence (the drugs.). We had to call our officer who then retrieved the drugs and brought them into the room. I also remember asking the judge some questions and that took awhile to get an answer back. I took my job very seriously. I am a very trusting person and wanted to make sure that I was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that he was guilty. We did not take a quick vote immediately. We talked about the evidence before taking our first vote. It took us several hours to reach our verdict. Maybe I would approach it differently if I knew the individual was on trial for killing two people. But I would still want to talk through all the evidence - Juliana's testimony, the blood, 911 calls, fetlife, etc. I'm not surprised at all that they didn't make a decision on Friday - they just didn't have enough time.
