Who's the biggest ahole tonight? Robby, Santos, or the surgeons?
Langdon He was aggressively sh!tty to Santos last season because she was catching on to his addiction and eventually reported him. She should have been his first apology. He was an arrogant addict and he’s arrogant in recovery, expecting her to accept his authority with no remorse on his part.
He was also on her because she was doing reckless stuff without approval that endangered patients and not following procedure. There was no saint in that dynamic. And yes, she has to accept his authority regardless of anyone's personal feelings because that how the hierarchy in an ED works. Santos was right about Langdon's drug use, but that doesn’t make her right about everything.
I admit I know zip about hospital administration, but I find it kind of surprising that you'd have the guy on probation supervising/having authority over the person who put him on probation.
I think the show is kind of explaining this as an oversight/screw-up -- Langdon wasn't supposed to come back today but they were short staffed so he got scheduled. Robby is leaving and wants nothing to do with Langdon, so obviously hasn't done anything to help onboard him or set up boundaries or best practices, or discuss how this is going to work with both Landon and Santos, as well as any other impacted staff. That's what a good boss would do but Robby is not being a good boss right now and also views this as not his problem anymore. Meanwhile Al-Hashimi seems like the sort to do all of that, but she only just started. It's also unclear how read in on the situation she is. She knows Langdon was in rehab and is returning, and she knows about his program, but does she know Santos was the one who reported him? Does she know he was stealing meds and that Santos figured it out when she discovered the tampered-with vial of Ativan? Al-Hashimi seems both emotionally intelligent and highly ethical, so it's hard to see her not taking an extremely hard line with Langdon if she knows those details, and perhaps being more sympathetic to Santos and understanding of Santos' behavior towards Langdon. Anyway I agree with you, it's ridiculous that Santos is in this situation and that it hasn't been addressed directly by attending and by Langdon himself to absolve her of the situation (she was correct and Langdon 100% needed to leave and get help when he did -- Santos is abrasive and hard to work with, but in this situation she was totally in the right despite being discouraged by Garcia and intimidated by Langdon to stay quiet). She shouldn't be put in a situation where she's taking orders from Langdon until it's addressed and resolved satisfactorily. And yet... The ED is very dysfunctional this season. A lot of weirdness and BS going on. It's a really stressful, unpleasant work environment despite having a lot of talented, kind, terrific doctors and nurses working there.
