I’m a fed who thinks that Dems need to hold firm until Repubs include provisions assuring what they agree to will be made to happen (no impoundments, etc), backpay for all Feds (and preferably contractors), and a temporary extension of the ACA subsidies long enough for the Repubs’ purportedly “secret” healthcare plan to be voted on. Repubs can re-open the government by nuking the filibuster or otherwise compromising with Dems. And the House should be back in DC immediately to work on actual funding bills or another CR given the pending bill expires 11/21.
The GOP eliminating the filibuster would be a fantastic win for Democrats. When is the next time you think Democrats will have 60 votes in the Senate? With the outsized influence of rural, conservative states in the Senate, it isn't happening any time soon. The only way Democrats will get anything done is to eliminate the filibuster. And having the GOP do it would shield the democrats form the political backlash. The Senate is an anti-democratic (small d) institution in the best of circumstances, and the modern filibuster makes it much more so. It would be great if it were gone.
