Loudoun rejects head over to VA Revolution, but this year VRSC had their tryouts the same time as Loudoun.
If Loudoun rejects go to VRSC, why did Loudoun threaten to bench players for going to VRSC tryouts? Loudoun knows VRSC has a better program and sunk to new lows to prevent players from moving club this year. I guess Loudoun wants to hang on to those rejects.
If VRSC get the MLSN slot - then you might see an exodus of top players from Loudoun (and other clubs). However right now there is zero exodus of players from the top 2-3 teams in Loudoun and the only boys age group where VRSC is remotely competitive with their top team is/was 2014. Sadly VRSC have been moving their top teams out of the higher NCSL divisions and dropping them to level 3&4. Same as tournaments where VRSC has been moving themselves down in tournament pools simply so they can post better records and claim “championships.” That’s Nico’s path to relevancy apparently - either buy it or lower the level of competition. Meanwhile Loudoun is pushing their kids up (eg 2014s playing 9v9 vs 2013s this spring) where they aren’t worrying about scores but focusing on development and pushing their players to grow (although they’ve done quite well playing up in 2nd NCSL division).
Wow, glad to know you know all of the teams so well at VRSC. Also, you might want to get the spelling of Niko's name correct. My son plays on the top team (black team) in his age group he played EDP in the fall this year NCSL in the spring. The past 2 years he played EDP both fall and spring. EDP didn't have a spring schedule of games this year. Their team was not dropped down to lower divisions in tournaments. They just played the Potomac Tournament (the tournament placed them not our club) they won their championship for their division. He is not on the 2014 team by the way! His team has never been dropped down a division in a tournament just to get a "win". They are competitive and are improving each year, their team did win against the Loudoun team in their league play this year. Just saying VRSC is out there being a little more competitive than all of you haters out there would like them to be!
Thats great for VRSC, congrats on the wins! As an outsider, I'm curious which Loudoun team did they beat? We have offers to both - still open FWIW - but at my son's age group it appears VRSCs "Black" team played LS "City" team - which by my research is the #3 team. I am most focused on development, but I'm hesitant to put my son on a top team who's playing against #3 teams from other clubs as I don't think that will make them better.
It depends on the age group. The younger ages (u9/u10) are all NCSL where the league assigns teams at random from season to season. And development is partially competition, but also coaching and the direction/environment.
It's not completely random at U9/U10. The coaches can make requests. If you look at the divisions, the top teams tend to be in divisions with other top teams. You can also see that there is sort of a top half and bottom half within a division, if you look at who plays against other. Having the appropriate level of competition is important, especially at the younger ages. Kids get discouraged if they're just getting crushed every week; similarly, they don't get better if they are crushing their opponents every week. It may be that playing LS's third team is the right level of competition for that VRSC team right now. LS is huge and doesn't really have to develop kids. There are plenty of kids with lots of natural athletic talent coming out for their travel teams at U9. The kids at VRSC may need more time to develop and learn how to play as a team, and it will take a year or two to see the results (if the coaches are good). VRSC may be a better fit for your son's development IF the coaching is good and if the offer from LS is not for their first or second team. If your son got a top or second team offer from LS, it seems like a no brainer to go there.
You need to make the decision of where you feel most comfortable. The person that answered you above is obviously a LS lover. You need to look at both programs for yourself. Talk to the coaches at both programs and go where you feel most comfortable and where you feel meets the needs of your son. Not based on what some mom or dad feels is best based on their opinion of the clubs. VRSC has professional coaches with coaching licenses. Their coaches are good very well trained coaches, the poster above made it sound like they are not very good coaches. Do your own research.
Ha! Not an LS lover at all. My own son plays somewhere more similar to VRSC. The things I said about level of competition come from watching my own son's team over the last couple of years. It's not hard to understand that LS doesn't have to work as hard to develop kids because they are getting kids who are already very good from a young age. If you're not at a mega-club who can pick from the cream of the crop, the coaches need to be that much better in order to develop the kids appropriately. If a kid is good enough to make the top team or two at LS in U9 or U10, they should start there because that's going to be an easier path to high level soccer if that's what the kid ends up wanting. They can always leave if it ends up being a bad experience. It's easier to leave a top team at a mega-club to go somewhere with less depth in the talent pool, than the other way around. You sound like a VRSC lover to me.
