Aug guy complains relentlessly about this, but guess what? Any Aug kid will be able to find a club to play on grade if need be. Will it be the level OR playing time they want? It depends how good their soccer is and being the youngest it'll have to be. If they aren't happy with the answer, they MAY find playing on age the better option for them. Either way, they are privileged to have options where 90-95% are going to the new age group with other summer birthdays misaligned having no options!
At top clubs August birthday options will be. 1. Play on your grade in school A team 2. Play on your grade in school B team 3. Play somewhere else
That may be true for a few clubs -- mostly USYS, btw -- who have said they're doing that, but the vast majority who took the time to say what they're doing said they'll take things on a case-by-case basis. That's the reality. We should be talking more about what's REALLY happening. You're second-favorite forum in NJ has a good thread there: "MIleage may vary. But below is what I am seeing on my daughter's ECNL team. She is Q1 birthday. So I am viewing this from the perspective of a parent whose child may be impacted. They have had a number of girls consistently come in and practice with the team in order to tryout. 1) ECNL girls from older team will walk into starting positions on the younger team, unless they are competing with one another. It is not their size or skill, but the speed at which they play. They are clearly a year ahead in development. 2) ECRL girls from older team are having a tough time. You can see that there is real gap between NL and RL. The RL girls are physically mature. But their games are less sophisticated than even the younger NL girls. 3) Girls coming in from GA older teams and EDP teams. Some really gifted athletes from older non ECNL teams have come through who are faster and physical. The coach may see them as projected to be better than current girls. They aren't currently. But the talent is there. All in all, I would say outside of older NL players there isn't a ton there to compete. Definitely not the RL girls. But there will be shakeup with the age change."
