Passports are $165 dollars and it costs another $15 to take a passport photo at the passport facility. If you need expedited processing, to ensure you hopefully get your passport before the 2026 midterms, that is $60 for expedited processing and $22 for expedited delivery. With the extreme influx of passport applications from this law people will be forced to pay $265 if they want to ensure they are able to vote in the 2026 midterms.

1. A passport is not required.
2. FWIW, a passport is $130--not $160.  I just renewed mine.  Standard delivery took about 3 weeks.  You can take your picture with your phone.

And, guess what?  You need a birth certificate the first time you get a passport.

That is only if you have a passport already and are renewing. It is $160 to get one if you don’t have a passport. Drivers licenses are not proof of citizenship, birth certificates are not sufficient if you got married and changed your name. A passport is the most realistic way to prove citizenship and it costs money. They are not free. If you want to require proof of citizenship to vote make passports free and make the effective date for the voter ID portion of the law Jan 1 2028 to make sure people have time to obtain one. The bill does not require or fund any mechanism for people to prove their citizenship without costing money. [/quote]
