“Also, specifically, if e.g., economics is the priority: Yes, Chicago, MIT, Harvard cannot be beat,“ They can’t be beat if you are putting the final touches on your PhD dissertation. That doesn’t mean you can’t equal them at the undergraduate level. The fact that most agree that Amherst, Williams, etc provide unsurpassed undergrad educations would seem to indicate that you don’t need a bunch of Nobel Prize winners to deliver top-notch UNDERGRADUATE classes. Considering how difficult it is to get a tenure- track job these days, even mediocre colleges have professors from excellent grad schools who should be able to handle any material covered in undergraduate classes.
I fully agree. You’re making / confirming my point and I appreciate your response. I hedged my general point, by saying I’m not suggesting schools schools are equal at the top. I also admit I am indeed looking ahead at grad school and PhDs, as I have one in economics and I think that is a field where it often is worth it. In this context, I got my degrees in Europe and am trying figure out the UNDERGRADUATE - graduate / PhD connection in the US educational (another thread perhaps). Finally, as a side note, my libertarian leaning friend back in the days checked U of C’s classes and showed me the line up for undergrad Econ introduction - Gary Becker for micro and Robert Lucas for macro. Two slam dunk non-sharing Nobel laureates You are indeed right about undergrad ed., but boy wouldn’t it be exciting to have Michael Jordan teaching you jump shots even if there would be hundreds of other aspiring basketball players there.
