Usually the whole Mall, from the grounds of the Washington Monument, all the way to the Capitol and the Capitol grounds (for the concert there) are totally full. The Capitol grounds we packed to the gills, and the reflecting pool area was crowded during the speech, but the Mall was otherwise totally empty.
Yes that was strange but he got his nice picture of people along the Reflecting Pool so he will be happy. I am sure that image will be used in the re-election campaign
Exactly. The Mall itself was much emptier than usual. I go down for the fireworks every year, this year included. Yes, the reflecting pool and Capitol were busy. But usually the entire mall is crowded and by the time the fireworks roll around, everyone's shoulder to shoulder. This year, nothing like that. It's strange that there are posters who are stating to the contrary and makes me wonder if they actually attended and if they did, did they only come to the Reflecting Pool and/or do they have any comparison from previous years. I've been coming to the DC fireworks for over 20 years, FWIW.
I've been going to the Mall for the Fourth for over 20 years as well, and I have to disagree. The Capitol and the Washington Monument have always been the epicenters of activity on the Fourth, with concerts and activities at each end many years. In-between, crowds come and go from museums, and some years there have been displays or other activities out there which of course draws better. For example, some years the Smithsonian Folklife Festival has overlapped the Fourth of July festivities. However, rarely has the "in-between" portion of the mall been as crowded as the areas where the concerts have been held at each end, especially near the end of the day as the time for fireworks approaches.
Agreed. I grew up here and have been going to the Mall for the 4th for decades. This year was just as "crowded" as other years, but the concentration of people was around the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol. The people trying their best to troll and make it out as something "sinister" simply don't want to admit the layout was different than years past. Anyone can see from these (UNphotoshopped pictures) that the crowd was huge.
