BY = 1/1-12/31 eligibility. In the US most schools start around Aug and this is also the age group cutoff. What ends up happening is players born between Aug and December are forced to play up on a team with grade older players. BTW the reason BY works for other countries is because schools say if you were born in X year you're in Y grade even if the school starts in August. We make things more complicated with districts using multiple different cutoff dates.

SY = 8/1-7/31 eligibility. This works for most schools because most schools cutoff/start dates are around Aug. The end result is most players on teams are the same grade in school. (much more than BY) The problem with SY is when districts start in Sept or even Oct or November. In this situation you get grade older kids playing on teams where most players are a grade younger. Because you can always play up most clubs in places where districts start in Sept/Oct/Nov will roster players up on the team with players their grade. This is how things worked before changing to BY in 2017.

The person argueing against August September October players playing on teams that are their grade in school doesn't live in a district where district cutoffs create large numbers of misaligned club soccer players. They dont understand that kids dont mind being forced to play up. Kids dont like being forced to play on a grade down teams. Also as players get older you'll need to play on a correct grade team for college recruiting.

GY showcases will never happen because it would create chaos for clubs. Right now showcase games are rolled into club dues. This means players on each team pay to play in showcases. If GY showcases happened older players not on the current level teams would be eligible to play in lower level showcases. But players on current teams already  paid for the right play at those showcases. You can see where this wont work.[/quote]
