More details in this Bethesda Today article: https://bethesdamagazine.com/2026/02/11/alleged-wootton-shooting-without-bond/
The shooting occurred Monday afternoon at the school at 2100 Wootton Parkway. Around 2:15 p.m., officers responded to the school for a report of a shooting and found the injured student in a hallway suffering from a gunshot wound. The school was placed on lockdown while officers searched the school and the injured student was transported to an area hospital by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. Officers later found and arrested the alleged shooter at a location away from the school, according to police. The attorneys representing the teen declined to provide a comment to Bethesda Today after the hearing. Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said after the hearing that the teen’s attorneys were attempting to move his case to juvenile court. McCarthy said the suspect was charged as an adult because of the nature of the charges, but his attorneys had the right to request that his case be moved to juvenile court. During the hearing, county prosecutor Kimberly Cissel said the teen told the 15-year-old girl that the gun was fake after pointing it at her, and later allegedly shot the 16-year-old, who was struck “mid-mass.” Police have said the two 16-year-olds were acquaintances. The injured student remains in the hospital and is still undergoing surgery, Cissel said. After the shooting, the alleged shooter ran back to his home and hid in his backyard, Cissel said. Charging documents for the teen, which would provide more details of the incident, are unavailable because they are sealed as of Wednesday, according to Lauren Demarco, a spokesperson for the state’s attorney’s office. Cissel said during the hearing the teen had put the entire school community at risk by his actions, noting he had recently moved to the Rockville school from James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring. During the hearing, the teen’s attorneys noted the shooting involved only the two 16-year-old students and that the teen may not have been the initial aggressor. The attorneys said they did not want their client to be put on trial during a bond hearing or by the media.
