It wasn’t petty jealousy. It was internalized misogyny. Millions of women were told that they were inherently less than men, less intelligent, less capable, just less all around.

And that’s just regular, non religious women. For women who were reared in many traditional religions, mostly Christianity, they were told by instruments of God that women were inherently less good, more sinful, the cause of the Fall of Man, incapable of being sacred (unless they birthed the Lord! Mary gets a special pass for birthing the Lord!).

Many women have internalized these messages and do not think critically about these messages, ever. Add in decades of personal experiences big and small that remind women that many men see them as lesser beings (and it’s still happening; my friend just switched companies because the guy she worked under really resented women - and this is at a company dominated by women in the C-suite), and you have women shutting down and existing in denial as a way to cope.
