I’ll offer a conservative opinion.   These things are hard to legislate.   Ideally they wouldn’t require legislation.  I personally have no idea how some people are okay with books like “gender queer” with its images of sex acts being in public school libraries.  But apparently they are.  And it seems that parents have found the only way to keep them out is to go to their representatives and get laws passed.  And these laws will overreach. Because there is a line between acceptable and unacceptable and it’s different for different families.  I wish people who think their kids should read Gender Queer would just buy it for their kids and not defend its presence in school.  I wish schools would err on the side of not having this material present when it is questionable.   But that’s not how it works today.  So we have laws instead of common sense and some of those laws go too far.  [/quote]

Just to use your dumb example, what do you think “gender queer” means, precisely? What kind of illicit books do you think were being read in schools? Look at those book shelves above. You think all those empty or covered shelves were populated by “gender queer” books?

DP.  You're calling the PP (and others) "beyond stupid" when you aren't even bright enough to follow along with the PP's post?  The point is that many parents feel the book, "Gender Queer," is sexually explicit (it is) and does not belong in public school libraries (it doesn't).

Of course those empty shelves weren't populated by books like "Gender Queer."  Unfortunately, because people like you inexplicably disagree with common sense, there is now legislation that is grossly overreaching so that [b]all [/b]books can be reviewed.  This would be unnecessary if there was even a shred of common sense from the left, but there clearly is not.  Simply removing "Gender Queer" from public school libraries would have been the obvious solution, but no.  Apparently removing an obviously pornographic book from school shelves was just a bridge too far for liberals.

Not to fear though!  You can still purchase this book (or check it out of the public library) and expose your own kids to pornography as much as you'd like.[/quote]

Because it’s sufficiently far enough outside your milieu for you to be able to be whipped into a panic about it. Not a one of you can point to a single elementary K-5 school or class it’s been in, nor can you point to anyone who has come to harm from reading a cartoon book about figuring out one’s sexuality and consent.

And if this book is in the school library in 6-8 or 9-12? GOOD. The “penis” you are all freaking out about is a finger. If you think a finger dangled in front one’s genital region is ban worthy, I’m sure you keep your fundamentalist children at home and with no screens, no phones and no friends who might sully them.

For decades that wouldn’t have even been up for discussion. You are creating all these imaginary issues when the basic fact is that parents want to stop the sexualization of children that is being pushed on them today.
