I would really like to hear from a conservative opinion. Technically it seems one has grounds to sue Florida to remove Bibles from schools based on Florida's own policy. The Bible has some scandalous references/descriptions.
I’ll offer a conservative opinion. These things are hard to legislate. Ideally they wouldn’t require legislation. I personally have no idea how some people are okay with books like “gender queer” with its images of sex acts being in public school libraries. But apparently they are. And it seems that parents have found the only way to keep them out is to go to their representatives and get laws passed. And these laws will overreach. Because there is a line between acceptable and unacceptable and it’s different for different families. I wish people who think their kids should read Gender Queer would just buy it for their kids and not defend its presence in school. I wish schools would err on the side of not having this material present when it is questionable. But that’s not how it works today. So we have laws instead of common sense and some of those laws go too far.
That’s not a “conservative” opinion, that’s a regressive and fascistic as the rest of your dumb party, you just tart it up with more words. Just to use your dumb example, what do you think “gender queer” means, precisely? What kind of illicit books do you think were being read in schools? Look at those book shelves above. You think all those empty or covered shelves were populated by “gender queer” books? You guys are just seriously beyond stupid. A few years ago, around 2016/2017 when we started calling Republicans Nazis for their support of Trump, you all took great offense and noted what you perceived to be a lack of parallels with that noted fascist party. And here you are, calmly and articulately defending fascism.
DP. You're calling the PP (and others) "beyond stupid" when you aren't even bright enough to follow along with the PP's post? The point is that many parents feel the book, "Gender Queer," is sexually explicit (it is) and does not belong in public school libraries (it doesn't). Of course those empty shelves weren't populated by books like "Gender Queer." Unfortunately, because people like you inexplicably disagree with common sense, there is now legislation that is grossly overreaching so that all books can be reviewed. This would be unnecessary if there was even a shred of common sense from the left, but there clearly is not. Simply removing "Gender Queer" from public school libraries would have been the obvious solution, but no. Apparently removing an obviously pornographic book from school shelves was just a bridge too far for liberals. Not to fear though! You can still purchase this book (or check it out of the public library) and expose your own kids to pornography as much as you'd like.
Oh honey. You’re beyond help.
^^ The response of someone who has nothing intelligent to say.
No, it’s the response of someone who is fed up with fascists - oh, pardon me, “mOdErAtEs” - blithely excusing fascism. It’s not 1932; we have some idea of how bad fascism can be and the ramifications of treating benignly or, worse, applauding it. “Some other books might get caught up, but it’s worth it if Gender Queer is gone.” That’s moronic. First of all, you fascists are all obsessed with this one book. Why just this one book? Because it’s sufficiently far enough outside your milieu for you to be able to be whipped into a panic about it. Not a one of you can point to a single elementary K-5 school or class it’s been in, nor can you point to anyone who has come to harm from reading a cartoon book about figuring out one’s sexuality and consent. And if this book is in the school library in 6-8 or 9-12? GOOD. The “penis” you are all freaking out about is a finger. If you think a finger dangled in front one’s genital region is ban worthy, I’m sure you keep your fundamentalist children at home and with no screens, no phones and no friends who might sully them. You are so obsessed with controlling other people’s lives and other people’s children because you’re terrified of a world of equality in which people know themselves and know how to act towards everyone with decency and honor. You don’t want Black or Native children to know their history and you sure don’t want your White kids to know the truth of what White America did to minorities, so you’re totally fine with those kinds of books getting disappeared. You don’t really like LGBTQIA+ people and the fact that those people can have families now makes you mad as hell, so you don’t care if books about those types of families are erased. If you want to rear your own children to be stupid and hateful, that’s your choice. It’s a dumb choice, but it’s clearly the choice you’ve committed to. And so I reiterate, hopefully with enough words that you can understand more fully what I meant when I said it the first time: “Oh honey. You’re beyond help.”
Is it really that surprising to you that parents don’t want books with images of sex acts in their kids’ schools? Parents don’t want sexual content in schools. For decades that wouldn’t have even been up for discussion. You are creating all these imaginary issues when the basic fact is that parents want to stop the sexualization of children that is being pushed on them today. It’s hard enough when it’s done in the media and on the internet. It shouldn’t be coming from the adults in school.
This is a list of the books that Duval County, FL banned. Which of these have images of sex acts in them? The Berenstain Bears and the Big Question? The Double Life of Pocahontas? The Life of Rosa Parks? Malala: A Hero for All? Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates? Do tell. https://pen.org/banned-books-florida/?fbclid=IwAR3MUhy2VxNRvfSOmPPLKf_yZfi1PliT-VX7RHxt7o7FTMO2jzAQKqxE8xM&mibextid=Zxz2cZ
Notice that the fascist PP hasn't come back to defend her crap.
